To be referred, you must fall into one of these two refugee classes.
You won’t be able to apply directly as a refugee to resettle in Canada.
You must get referred by The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or any private sponsorship group.
There are 2 refugee classes and to be referred you must fall into any of these classes.
1) Convention refugee abroad class:
You will be eligible for this class:
• If you are outside your home country,
• If you cannot return to your home country due to any well-founded fear based on
• Race
• Religion
• Political opinion
• Nationality, or
• Membership in a particular social group. Like: gender, sexual orientation, etc.
2) Country of asylum class
You will be eligible for this class:
• If you are outside your home country or the country you normally live in.
• If you have been affected by civil war or armed conflict.
• If you have been denied on an ongoing basis by your basic human rights.
Refugees under this class can be privately sponsored.

• If there is another stable option for you for your protection. Like if you have an offer to be resettled in another country.
• If you have already become another country citizen.
• If you willingly choose to go back to the country you left.
• If there are no longer the existence of the reasons you left your country for.
